About the Book:

India has several ecological traditions which have preserved the natural environment. The antiquity and heritage of Sikkim is replete with different ecological traditions such as sacred groves, sacred trees, sacred tanks, sacred animals and sacred mountains, which continue to be revered by the people. This book is the Sixteenth in the series of publications on ECOLOGICAL TRADITIONS OF INDIA, an ancient heritage of the Indian people.

Sikkim EIACP PC HUB, Gangtok organized a Seminar on the Ecological Traditions of Sikkim, in collaboration with C.P.R Environmental Education Centre on February 27, 2023. The papers presented in this proceeding record many of the traditions of Sikkim that have been used to preserve and protect the environment through the ages. These have been documented by eminent scholars and collected in this volume, which is the sixteenth edition in the "Ecological Traditions of India" series. The state whose ecological traditions have been published till now include Assam, Andhra Pradesh, Goa, Gujarat, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh & Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra, Meghalaya, Odisha, Punjab, Rajasthan, Sikkim Tamil Nadu and West Bengal.

Subject experts contributing to the Sikkim edition are Dr Ghanashyam Bastola, Programme Manager and Head of The Mountain Institute Sikkim, Shri Hissey Lachungpa, Chairman of Lachung Biodiversity Management Committee (BMC) and member of Lachung Dzomsa, Shri Namgyal Lepcha, Hee-Gyathang BMC member, Dr. Sonam Rinchen, SDM (Dzongu), Dr Bharat Kumar Pradhan, Scientific Associate at Sikkim State Biodiversity Board and Dr. P. Sudhakar from CPREEC Chennai presented their papers on diverse ecological traditions of the state.
