This day marks the unfortunate incident of Bhopal Gas Tragedy in the year 1984, when the world witnessed one of the worst recorded accidents in the history of chemical disasters at the Union Carbide plant in Bhopal, India.

The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Conference, in June 2013, unanimously endorsed this day and requested its official adoption at the 68th UN General Assembly.
