World Environment Day June 5, 2018 is being celebrated on the theme "Beat Plastic Pollution" and India is the host country for global event.
Forest, Environment & Wildlife Management Department, Government of Sikkim will be flagging off 20 days riverfront cleanliness drive along river Rani Chu and its adjoining streams, jhoras and nallahs in and around Gangtok on 15th of May 2018 at Ranipool. The cleanliness drive is being organized as a part of the global celebration of World Environment Day which culminates on 5th of June, 2018 in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change, Government of India. India is the host country for this year’s global event and the theme is “Beat Plastic Pollution”. The riverfront cleanliness drive will be participated by eco-club volunteers from schools and colleges with active involvement of GMC, NGOs and other local stakeholders. The campaign is aimed to generate awareness on the threats to environment of plastic pollution under the National Green Corps School Eco-Club programme funded by the Government of India. Several other programmes like mini marathon on June 3, 2018 and felicitation of plastic free schools, state green school awards during main function at district and state level is also planned to commemorate World Environment Day 2018. Besides, simultaneous awareness drives for hoteliers, tour operators, taxi drivers, local people and other target groups will also be carried out throughout the State.
