International Conference on "Conservation of Natural and Cultural Values of Khangchendzonga National Park"
May 15-16, 2015 - Gangtok, Sikkim
Khangchendzonga National Park (KNP) has been recently posed to UNESCO for inscription as the World Heritage Site on 'mixed' (natural and cultural) nomination basis. The proposal has cleared the 'completeness check' and is now assigned to evaluation by UNESCO experts.
The park is an outstanding example of convergence of natural and cultural features within a landscape and is a witness to the formation of the erstwhile kingdom of Sikkim and the inception and practice of buddhism in the State. It has unique assets of rare and endangered fauna, flora and physical elements including mt. Khangchendzonga, the guardian deity of Sikkimese people.
To give further international exposure to KNP, the Government of Sikkim is organizing an international conference on "Conservation of natural and cultural values of Khangchendzonga National Park" on 15th and 16th May, 2015 at Gangtok, Sikkim, in collaboration with the Wildlife Institute of India which will be inaugurated by the Honourable Chief Minister of Sikkim.
