The Environment Education Programme (EEP) is a flagship initiative under the revamped Central Sector Scheme on Environment Education, Awareness, Research, and Skill Development (EEARSD). Implemented by the Environment Education Division of Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Government of India, this program aims to enhance environmental awareness and sustainability practices among children and youth.
About the Programme
EEP is designed to complement classroom learning by providing experiential exposure to nature and hands-on activities. The program integrates behavioral interventions such as education, enablement, incentivization, modeling, persuasion, and training, in line with the principles of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
The Environment Education Division also serves as a coordinating body, linking various ministry divisions with the Eco-club network to facilitate impactful educational initiatives.
Programme Objectives
✔ Sensitize children and youth to environmental challenges.
✔ Promote sustainable lifestyles through interactive learning experiences.
✔ Encourage scientific thinking, creativity, and environmental stewardship.
✔ Support community-driven environmental initiatives through structured programs.
Target Beneficiaries
✔ Eco-clubs under the National Green Corps Programme.
✔ Eco-clubs and youth organizations established under various Ministry of Education schemes.
Implementation Strategy
The programme is executed through Central and State-level implementing agencies, which organize:
✔ Sustainability-focused workshops and training programs.
✔ Exhibitions, competitions, and thematic campaigns.
✔ Nature camps for experiential learning.
✔ Community-based environmental initiatives.
By fostering environmental awareness and action, EEP empowers the next generation to actively contribute to sustainability and conservation efforts.
The State Implementing Agency for Sikkim is Forest and Environment Department. EEP Sikkim is implemented by ENVIS Programme cell of the Forest and Environment Department. Total 900 Eco-Clubs under schools and colleges are registered under this programme in the State of Sikkim.
