The World Environment Day (WED) is celebrated every year on 5th June since 1974, engaging governments, businesses and citizens in an effort to address the pressing environmental issues. It is the United Nations Day for encouraging worldwide awareness and action to protect our environment. This year the WED theme was ‘Ecosystem Restoration’ and on this day, the UN decade 2021-2030 for ecosystem restoration was launched.

 


In the state of Sikkim, the Forest and Environment Department steered the state-wide celebration of the WED by engaging all sections of the society for generation of true environmental consciousness. In the current situation, wherein, the state-wide lockdown was extended to contain the pandemic till 7th of June 2021 in the State of Sikkim, the department of Forest and Environment organised a symbolic programme on a much reduced scale of ceremonial plantation followed by flagging of the fire tenders (4 nos) by the Hon’ble Governor and the Hon’ble Chief Minister at Raj Bhawan premises. Similarly at the disctrict and block level, plantation drives were carried by active participation of local dignitaries, eco-clubs, government and non-governmental organizations and public duly following Covid SoPs. Online compettion on various events such as quiz, paintin»g, slogan writing, photography and short video contest was held in which about 7000 participated.
