The event commenced with the ceremonial plantation by the Honourable Chief Minister and dignitaries at Circuit House premises. The main function was held at Chintan Bhawan with lighting of the ceremonial lamp by the chief guest and welcome address by the Principal Secretary Forest Shri M. L. Srivastava IFS.

The chief guest launched the Sikkim Climate Inventory & Monitoring System (SCIMS) web portal. A short video demonstration on SCIMS was screened. The SCIMS is a concrete step towards the States’ vision to remain Carbon negative. It also ensures mitigation of climate change with the conservation of the State’s pristine natural assets alongside several socio-economic co-benefits. The first step towards realizing this vision for the state is to measure its Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions and emission reductions that result from its actions on an ongoing basis. In this direction, the Forests, Environment, and Wildlife Management Department (FEWMD) and IORA Ecological Solutions Pvt. Ltd. Funded by Shakti Sustainable Energy Foundation, have developed the Sikkim Climate Inventory and Monitoring System (SCIMS), covering “GHG Inventory System” that can prepare GHG emission inventories at the state level annually and “Climate MRV System” for Measurement, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) of ongoing actions in Sikkim that lead to emission reduction or carbon sequestration.

The chief guest also released a book on Sivilculture depicting various timber species found in different altitudinal zones of the State. The day-long event witnessed awards and felicitation to eco-club schools and field staff, environment theme song by students of Tadong Senior Secondary School and Burfuk Primary School.

The Honourable Chief Minister in his address congratulated the awardee schools on their achievements and encouraged the State towards holistic development through protection and conservation of environment. He further directed the nodal department to extend proper nurture and care of the seedlings planted and to accelerate their efforts in spreading environmental awareness. The Honourable Minister Forest in his address stressed upon the statutory provisions given in the Constitution of India regarding rights and responsibilities of every citizen towards clean and safe environment. The Chief Secretary in his address emphasized the deteriorating effects of air, water and noise pollution and its impact on the climate. He also exhorted the house to commute by walk to office at least one day a week to reduce vehicular emissions. The Principal Secretary –cum- PCCF in his address highlighted the underlying factors causing pollution like burning of fossil fuels and reinforced a need for a more aware society. He also detailed various steps taken by the State Pollution Control Board to check and control pollution.

The Chief Minister’s Green School Rolling Trophy & State Green Schools Award instituted in the year 2011 for acknowledging the efforts of school’s positive actions for environment were awarded to 10 schools under Sr. Secondary, Secondary,  Jr. High school, Primary School and Private School categories with cash prizes of Rs. 5.0 lakh to one best school and Rs. 1.0 lakh to 5 schools under SSS/SS, and Rs. 50,000 each for best schools under Jr. High school, Primary school and Private School category. The awards also included trophies, certificates and gift hamper of one year’s subscription of CSE’s Down to Earth fortnightly magazine.

To facilitate this award scheme, Forest Department has set up 856 eco-clubs at schools and colleges with provision of financial aid of Rs 5000/- each annually; Green teachers training and other resource materials like green teacher’s handbook, waste segregation bins (blue & green), permanent eco-club banner, biodiversity register etc are given to these eco-club school from time to time.

The Letter of Appreciation was awarded to the following field staff for historical capture of the first camera trap footage of Royal Bengal Tiger on 11th of November 2018 at an altitude of 8,677 ft near Lampokhari in Pangolakha Wildlife Sanctuary and on 5th of February 2019 near Ek Ghotay at an altitude of 11,715 ft in Kyongnosla Alpine Sanctuary.

At the district level, the function to celebrate World Environment Day was organised by Divisional Forest Officers of Environment division at Dodak Secondary School in West District, Phamtam Jr. High School in North District and at Tendong Biodiveristy Park in South District.
