World Environment Day (WED) is an annual event that takes place on the 5th June. It serves as a global platform for raising awareness and taking action on pressing environmental issues, each year WED focuses on the specific theme to draw attention to a particular environment concern. So, the World Environment Day on 5th June 2023 focused on the theme “solution to plastic pollution” under the campaign #BeatPlasticPollution.”
Likewise, in Sikkim, on the occasion of World Environment Day, various activities and events were organized at different Districts, including tree planting campaigns, cleanup drives, educational programs seminars and conferences initiating to promote sustainable practices, conservation efforts and the importance of environmental protection.
The Forest and Environment Department at respective Districts and forest blocks steered several events along with plantations and clean up drives with dignitaries at local levels. The events were coordinated by DFOs of Environment & Soil Conservation, Territorial, Social Forestry and Wildlife division of respective districts. For plantation, saplings were distributed at various blocks to avail plantation for local public, NGOs, JFMCs, EDCs and other local bodies for taking up plantation at institutional premises, at various school’s, government office premises, barren lands, private holdings, forest area and so on.
The World Environment Day Campaign “Beat Plastic Pollution” encouraged people to take action to minimize plastic pollution by using single use plastic and advocating eco friendly substitutes. Although Sikkim banned the use of single use plastic much earlier, the state has gone one step ahead to ban plastic water bottles up to 2 liters in the state of Sikkim. The fact that we no longer see plastic bottles around is a clear indication of this. To reduce carbon footprints, implored all of fellow people to say “No” to plastic and to put the concepts of reduce, reuse and recycle into practice.
