WILDLIFE WEEK 2015 CELEBRATED 

 

OCTOBER 2- 8, 2015

 

Theme: "Living with Wildlife"

As usual the Wildlife week celebration was held during the month of October at various places in the State of Sikkim.
 

Following activities were organized by the Wildlife Circle of Forest Environment & Wildlife Management Department to commemorate the Wildlife Week Celebration 2015 in all four districts of State mainly involving school children in awareness Campaign.

  • Display of banners with slogans in strategic points in all districts.
  • Awareness programme on Wildlife in all district.
  • Students rally involving school teachers, students & pubic.
  • Essay/Painting/Quiz Competitions by the students on wildlife & environment.
  • Radio talk through All India Radio & FM stations.

Wildlife Week Celbration by East Widlife Divsion

Wildlife week is celebrated from October 2 - 8 every year and various activities related to wildlife conservation are organized to commemorate this week. Similarly, Wildlife East Division, Forest Environment and Wildlife Management Department, Government of Sikkim organized two days programme from 5th Oct to 6th Oct to celebrate the wildlife week in Fambonglho Wildlife Sanctuary East Sikkim.

The two days programme was attended by Conservator of Forests (Wildlife), DFO (Wildlife East Division), ACFs (Wildlife East), students and teachers from Penlong Secondary school, Lingdok Senior Secondary School, Pangthang Junior Secondary School, Bojoghari Junior High School, Students pursuing Bachelor of Science in forestry and forest field staffs from Fambonglho Wildlife Sanctuary, Kyongnosla Alpine Sanctuary and Pangolakha Wildlife Sanctuary.

The programme included trekking from Golitar to Tinjurey East Sikkim where the students were made aware of the importance of conservation of protected areas. The major objective of the programme was to generate awareness about the surrounding nature and wildlife.

The programme consisted of elocution, painting and quiz competition which was based on the wildlife and its importance in ecology. The students actively participated in all the competitions and also spoke about various measures to protect wildlife. The programme ended with a short film on human animal conflict.

The North Wildlife Division, FEWMD celebrated the Wildlife Week 2015 (2nd-8th October) in Lachung with the theme “Living with wildlife”. The celebration involved a series of activities with Cleanliness drive in Shingba Rhododendron Sanctuary, Yumthang and Zero point with support from the Dzomsa, Army and GREF. Theme based quiz & painting competition was conducted In Lachung Secondary School.

 

The concluding day was held in the Dzomsa Hall in Lachung with SDM, Chungthang Shri. Sonam Topgay Tashi as the Chief Guest. The CF, Wildlife Shri. Nima Wangdi highlighted the importance of coexistence of humans and wildlife, the increasing human wildlife interactions and how one must meet their needs while sustaining wildlife. It witnessed large and enthusiastic participation of Pipon, Shri Lakpa Lachungpa and public; Head Master Shri L. D. Sharma, teachers and students of Government Secondary School, Lachung, EDC members, NGO and Forest officials, DFO Shri T.T Bhutia, ACF, Miss Karma Choden Bhutia, RO Shingba, Shri Karma Gelay Lachungpa . The Resource Person included Shri Chewang Bonpo and Shri Nosang Limboo from the Sikkim Ornithological Society, Dr. Bharat Pradhan, and local youths Shri Hissey Lachungpa and Shri Pema Lachungpa who spoke on Biodiversity of Lahung, Avifauna & Birdwatching, Ecotourism, Waste Management and Human Wildlife Interactions.

The winners of the quiz and painting competition were awarded a certificate and a prize. Likewise Rhododendron charts were distributed to all by the Department and also a Bird & Butterfly chart was handed over to the School by SOS.

The main objective of this programme was to make people more aware of the conservation and protection of the wild life. As a gesture, the Pipon offered Khadas to the Officials and the Resource persons for sharing their knowledge with the locals and making the Celebration a success.
