
February 2, 2025: Sikkim celebrated World Wetlands Day, marking a historic milestone in its conservation efforts with the recognition of Khachoedpalri Lake as the state’s first Ramsar Site. Over 2000 volunteers participated in the pre-event and run-up events such as poster campaign, cleanup drives and public awareness campaigns across the State, including Marchak, Assangthang, Chemchey, Jorethang, and Khecheopalri Lake, as part of the Save Wetlands Campaign conducted during January 14–February 2, 2025.
Honoring World Wetlands Day:
- Cleanup campaign and environmentally friendly garbage management projects in Tungkyong Dho, Dzongu.
- School bag distribution, cleanup effort, and conservation awareness in Tsomgo Lake premise.
- Birdwatching, nature walks and talks about Khachoedpalri Lake's designation as a Ramsar Site.
Khachoedpalri Lake's Ramsar designation is a significant step in Sikkim's environmental conservation efforts, guaranteeing international backing for wetland preservation while encouraging sustainable ecotourism and wildlife conservation.
