ENVIS Hub of Forest and Environment Department, Government of Sikkim organized a three-day long sustainable lifestyle hands-on workshop on skilling in preparing eco-friendly alternatives for single use plastics. The workshop was held at Gram Vikash Kendra, Kabi, Mangan District on January 23-25, 2024 wherein about 60 students, youths and local enthusiasts from in and around Kabi participated.The programme was conducted as a part of Mission LiFE – Lifestyle for Environment campaign (2022-2028) under the Environment Education Programme (EEP) sponsored by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change.
The workshop focused on providing hands-on skilling on preparing decorative from natural resources such as leaves, flowers, bamboo, plant twigs, and also demonstrated plastic waste upcycling in the process for making various useful handicrafts.
The event aimed promote eco-friendly lifestyle by eliminating the use of Single-Use Plastics as decorative which are most common during functions such as birthdays, marriages etc.The resource experts led by Ana Lama and team from Sikkim Blossoms, a voluntary organization based in Gangtok conducted the sessions in which the participants showed great enthusiasm.All participants were provided certificates and best three products as outcome of the training were also rewarded with gifts.
The workshop had the presence of Director (ENVIS) Shri B.B Gurung IFS, Joint Director (ENVIS) Smt Kusum Gurung, AD (BAC Kabi) Shri Rinzing Namgyal Bhutia, AEO (Kabi) Shri Tashi D Bhutia, local volunteer Shri Topen Bhutia and Sr. Programme Officer (ENVIS) Shri Rajen Pradhan as other speakers and motivators.
