The World Environment Day (WED) is celebrated every year on 5th June since 1974, engaging governments, businesses and citizens in an effort to address the pressing environmental issues. It is the United Nations Day for encouraging worldwide awareness and action to protect our environment. The UN designated theme for World Environment Day on 5 June 2023 will focus on solutions to plastic pollution under the campaign #BeatPlasticPollution in line with the UN Decade of Ecosystem Restoration 2021-2030.


In the state of Sikkim, the Forest and Environment Department steers the celebration of the WED by engaging all sections of the society for generation of true environmental consciousness. The programme is being organised by all offices under the department including block offices, range offices, forest check post including local dignitaries, functionaries, stakeholders like JFMCs, EDCs, SHGs, schools and with participation of general public at large.


The state level function is being held at Nar Bahadur Bhandari Government College Tadong, Gangtok District  on June 5 (Monday) from 9 AM onwards. The Hon'ble Chief Minister of Sikkim Shri Prem Singh Tamang (Golay) is the chief guest on the occasion.

 

District-wise celebration by Forest and Environment Department is also being held at the following venues:

Mangan District : Government Sr. Secondary School, Mangan
Pakyong District : Pachey Gumpa, Pakyong
Namchi District : Biodiversity Park, Kitchudumra, Kamrang
Soreng District : Gumpa Dara, Soreng
Gyalshing District : Gyalshing Town


Key activities during this day include:
- Promoting Mission LiFE – Lifestyle for environment amongst citizens for promoting sustainable living.
- Ceremonial plantation under Mero Rukh Mero Santati - planting 100 trees for every newborn in Sikkim, wherein some of the registered parents will be participating. This event will be further held in grandeur during first week of July 2023 during Santati Saptah where all registered parents will take part.

- Other events include school level competitions, cleanup drives and sensitization drives.
