EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Across the Indian Himalayan Region (IHR) there is need to enable and empower and connect communities to the natural and cultural fabric of the larger landscapes that define and sustain our character and quality of life.

Our landscapes provide clean air and water and healthy outdoor recreation. They buffer us from floods and fire, mitigate climate change, improve public health, and safeguard cultural heritage, wildlife, and ecological systems. Our landscapes provide food, fiber, jobs, and community vitality. And they provide the special sense of place that defines a community and region and—if not diminished—is passed down through the generations.

From conserving endangered species to confronting climate change, natural resource management and conservation requires effective education and communication to achieve long-term results in our complex world. Design Thinking and an Inclusive Design Research can help natural resource managers understand how to strategically use different outreach techniques and to promote new behaviours by involving and targeting their diverse audiences.

The duration of the project is two years which will aim at not only creating innovative communication strategies but also creative content to sustain the communication initiatives developed in the project duration.
