National Environment Awareness Campaign



The National Environment Awareness Campaign was launched by the Ministry of Environment & Forests, Government of India in 1986, and is being continued every year. Several non-governmental organizations, educational and training institutions, professional associations, scientific bodies, community organizations, and also a whole range of other agencies participate in the campaign. These bodies singularly or in partnership with other organizations, organize programmes for creating environmental awareness followed by field action at the local, regional and national level.

NEAC 2012-13: Theme - "BIODIVERSITY CONSERVATION" [Updated on May 1, 2012]

Proposals are invited from the registered NGO’s, voluntary organizations, educational institutions, State Government Departments, registered professional bodies, etc., working in the field of environment and sustainable development for conducting various activities such as Workshops, Camps/Padyatras/Rallies, Competitions, Festivals/Street Theatre/Science fairs and for preparation of educational resource material for creating mass awareness on the identified theme/sub-themes. The proposal must also include an action oriented component, which would contribute to conservation, sustainable use and equitable sharing of benefits. Following are some of the sub-themes based on which proposals can be submitted:

1. Critical, endangered and endemic species conservation
2. Conservation of critical and fragile habitats & corridors
3. Forest conservation
4. Wetlands conservation
5. Conservation of Mangroves & Coral Reefs
6. Land degradation & biodiversity
7. Conservation and promotion of Medicinal plants
8. Renewable energy - solar, wind, biogas, etc
9. Vermi-composting & organic farming
10. Agro forestry
11. Cultivation of Fruit trees
12. Germplasm conservation
13. Restoration of Grasslands
14. Livestock- indigenous breed conservation
15. Biodiversity conservation in Urban & peri-Urban areas
16. Maintaining people’s biodiversity registers
17. Biodiversity & traditional knowledge and equitable benefit sharing
18. Biodiversity based traditional crafts
19. Biodiversity and sustainable practices (rain water harvesting, use of eco-friendly bags, etc)
20. Sustainable Tourism
21. Gender in Biodiversity conservation
The guidelines and proforma for submission of proposals can be obtained free of cost from the Office of Senior Programme Officer (ENVIS Centre), Forest Environment and Wildlife Management Department, Forest Secretariat Annex II (Ground Floor), Deorali, Gangtok or can be downloaded from link given below:

Last Date of Submission of Proposal is 25th May 2012.
Proposals received after the last date will not be entertained. It may be noted that the decision regarding approval/rejection of proposals including the quantum of financial assistance to be provided will be taken by the Ministry and not by the RRA

The participating agencies as approved by the North-Eastern Regional Committee will be provided financial grant-in-aids to the tune of Rs. 10,000/- to Rs. 30,000/-.

  • NEAC 2011-12 Theme: "Forests for Sustainable Livelihood"
    • Sustainable forest management can contribute significantly to sustainable livelihood. Sustainable development implies use of natural resources such that future generations can attain the same level of well being as enjoyed by the present generation. Sustainable livelihood of forests means utilizing, in a way to use it today to ensure similar benefits, health and productivity in the future also. The campaign focuses to sensitize and aware the local community at 111 different locations throughout Sikkim State during its period of implementation.
