Scientists warn huge glacial outburst in Sikkim - Satellite identifies potential danger atop Himalayas

Scientists of National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC) based in Hyderabad has given an alarming picture about the ‘very high’ possibility of a huge glacial lake in Sikkim.

As per an IANS report, the satellite-based study of NRSC indicate that the lake formed at the snout of South Lhonak glacier, about 7000 m high atop the Himalayas in North Sikkim, has a ‘very high’ potential to burst and create devastation downstream.  The lake, bounded only by loose soil and debris, could cause havoc downstream if it ruptures, according to NRSC scientists.
