During the Mith & Mithini Reverence Programme, the Chief Minister’s Green School Rolling Trophy and State Green School Awards 2018 were presented to schools for their green initiatives during a programme held at Fambonglho wildlife Sanctuary, Golitar, East Sikkim.  Certificate and cash prize for Mini marathon and felicitations of schools and colleges for riverfront cleaning initiative was also given.

 

Road and Bridges Minister G.M. Gurung was the chief guest of the event, also attended by Forest Minister Tshering Wangdi Lepcha, Bollywood singer and Sikkim’s Green Ambassador Shri Mohit Chauhan and his wife, MLAs and Officials. The programme stated with guests proceeding into the solemn bond of forging into the Mith ties with individual trees following which they visited the upcoming yoga centre in the area. Singer Mohit Chauhan was presented with the ‘Green Ambassador Certificate”. The singer affirmed his love for the place and said such a pristine, holy land should be well protected and that it was a privilege and honor to be bestowed with such recognition.

 

Minister G.M. Gurung talked about Sikkim and how the sacredness of this Himalayan State should be maintained with selflessness and humanity. He said in today’s time protection and  nurturing of the environment is a must and he gave valuable suggestions on maintaining the purity of this place  along with encouraging the people present to be more human.

 

Forest minister T.W.Lepcha talked in detail about the State’s unique age old tradition of bonding between man and the tree called Mith and Mithini. He thanked the Chief Minister for his various environmental measures which has steered the State towards forming some very unique initiatives. Sikkim is the first State in the country to launch the ‘Chief Minister’s Green School Rolling Trophy and the State Green School Awards’.

 

This year, 9 schools were selected for the State Green School Awards. The winning school were- Singhik SS with cash prize of Rs. 5 lakh; Pelling SSS, Dikchu SSS, ChubaSS  and Phodong SSS received cash prize of Rs. 1 lakh and Pakyong JHS, Bakchu PS, Singpheng PS and ST.Josheph’s School Kingston, Rhenock were awarded cash prize of Rs. 50,000 each.

 

A mini marathon or greenathon with the theme, ‘run to beat plastic pollution’ was organized by the Forest department on June 3 as part of the World Environment Day activity wherein around 500 of runners participated. The trophies, certificates and cash prize to the winners were distributed. The department also felicitated 17 schools and collages with certificate of appreciation and Rs. 5000 cash incentive each for their active role in the riverfront cleanup drive organized from may 15 to June 2 as part of the World Environment Day activity on the theme, ‘Beat Plastic Pollution’.

 

A handbook titled, ‘Ecotourism Destinations of North Sikkim’ written by Pem Tshering Lepcha from Singhik, North Sikkim was also released during the function.
