Brief Report on State-wide Activities conducted during September 11-16, 2017 to mark the 30th Anniversary of Montreal Protocol

 

World Ozone Day 2017 with the UNEP theme “Caring for all life under the sun” was observed and celebrated across the State of Sikkim on the 16th day of September 2017 with several pre-event and during the event activities. Sikkim State ENVIS Centre at Forests, Environment & Wildlife Management Department, Government of Sikkim, also functioning as a part of the State Nodal Agency for National Green Corps School Eco-Club programme coordinated and conducted various activities such painting and slogan writing competion, video screenings, rallies and other interative outreach programmes from 11th September to 16th September 2017 to commemorate the 30th anniversary of Montreal Protocol for the preservation of ozone layer that supports entire life on earth.

 

Active and energetic participation of school students and teachers were observed throughout the event. Amongst all events organised, field activity cum interactive outreach programme amongst the school students with the electronic vendor at the service centre was a unique experience for the students and noted as an effective sensitization drive. Both the students and the vendor shared information on the need to protect the ozone layer particularly by following safe practices of repair and dumping of appliances that could have harmful ozone depleting substances. ENVIS centre coordinated this event with the students of Government Girls Senior Secondary School, Deorali, Gangtok East Sikkim by taking them to a nearby Samsung Service Centre where they interacted with the service engineer Mr Benu Sharma.
