The central government orders Ban of Mirex and Hexachlorobenzene, 2014

Background: The Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POP) came into force from 17th May 2004 and India ratified the said convention in the year 2006. Mirex and Hexachlorobenzene has been listed as POP in Annex A of the Convention. Mirex has not been registered as an insecticide under the provision of the Insecticides Act 1968 and the Registration Committee in its 342nd meeting held on 27th september 2013 has recommended in its minutes for banning the Mirex and Hexachlorobenzene.

Now, the Central Government in consultation with Ministry of Agriculture on being satisfied that the use of Mirex and Hexachlorobenzene involves health hazards to human beings or animals, through Notification# S.O. 910(E) and Notification# S.O. 911(E) respectively dated 27th March 2014 has made the folowing Order namely:-

  1. The Banning of Mirex Order 2014
  2. The Banning of Hexachlorobenzene Order 2014
