Sikkim celebrated World Environment Day 2014. Namchi Girls SSS bags CM's Green School Rolling Trophy

State level celebration of World Environment Day was observed at the Namchi Girls' Senior Secondary School auditorium, South Sikkim on 5th June 2014.

Namchi Government Girls’ Senior Secondary School bagged the Chief Minister’s Green School Rolling Trophy-cum-State Green School Awards 2014. The award comprising of Rs. 5 lakh, certificate and a trophy was handed away by State Power Minister D.D. Bhutia, the chief guest during the State level World Environment Day celebration at the school premises. The environment day themed “Small Islands and Climate Change” was organized by Forest Department.

Prizes to other subsequent winner (see table below) of the CM’s Rolling Trophy and for painting and slogan writing competition were also handed away by the minister.

The daylong celebration commenced with the ceremonial plantation programme in the school premise by the chief guest.

In his address, the minister highlighted several accolades and accomplishment achieved by the State government for environment conservation which he added has set an example for the entire nation.

Forest Minister Tshering Wangdi Lepcha also pointed out that the State Green Mission project under which numerous saplings of different species have been planted has proved to be beneficial in environment conservation.

PCCF (Environment), Anil Mainra, while laying emphasis on the need to preserve the environment also notified the gathering about the various environment related schemes under the State government including ‘Paryavaran Mahotsav’, Ten minutes to Earth and State Green Mission.

Also present on the occasion were Ministers G.M. Gurung, Tulsi Devi Rai, S.B Subedi, Arjun Kr. Ghatani, Somnath Poudyal, MLAs, Zilla Adhyaksha of all the four districts, heads of departments and other nodal officers.

The programme also saw the release of publications such as Panda Newsletter, Posters of flora and fauna wealth of Sikkim, books, calendars and CDs followed by the screening of snippet on Sikkim’s Organic Mission.
