Outburst inference of South Lhonak glacial lake dismissed. Field visit by DST team reports no immediate threat of GLOF

The Sikkim Government, while endorsing that the South Lhonak lake has expended over the decades, does not agree with inference made from satellite based studies about the ‘very high possibility’ of its Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF).

AGREED: Lake’s size has almost doubled in past 46 years is close to epicenter.

DISAGREED: Immediate outburst possibility for three field verifications

1. Robust moraine acting as a natural dam.

2. Natural outlet to discharge lake water regularly.

3. No impact of earthquake of Sep 18, 2011 even though lake.
